The GMT-Master, introduced in 1955, was developed to meet the needs of international pilots.  The watch was originally designed in collaboration with Pan AM Airways and issued to airline crews for long haul flights. GMT or Greenwich Mean Time was the originally recognized universal standard time now known as Coordinated Universal Time. The original  GMT Master watch had a 24 hour display fourth hand complication directly linked to and displaying the same time zone as the standard 12 hour hand, the GMT hand allowed crews to set the watch to the Universal Time or a specific time zone. GMT or UTC is the time zone that is required for all aviation planning, weather forecasts, schedules and other paperwork, therefore having an accurate measure of this is critical. In the early 1980s the Rolex GMT-Master II was released (although production of the original version continued alongside it until the late 1990s), and has since become even more invaluable to aviation professions involved long-distance travel. The watch Features a rotatable 24-hour graduated bezel and a separate 24-hour hand which allows those who travel the world to read three different time zones. Two simultaneously. The GMT-Master II watch looks almost identical to the original and uses a movement that has the additional capability of an independently adjustable quickset hour hand that can be adjusted to local time without stopping the seconds or disturbing the minutes and 24 hour GMT hand.

Although the original Rolex GMT Master was only available in stainless steel, as it was conceived as a functional, work watch, Rolex has been making luxury versions in both mixed steel and gold and all gold since the 1970s and there are even exotic variations that incorporate elaborate designs to include precious stones. Some of the more popular pieces from the contemporary GMT-Master II collection include the 116710BLNR two-tone Oyster stainless steel GMT-Master II known as “the Batman” for its black and blue bezel encompassing a sleek black dial, the 116713LN Oyster GMT Master II featuring a perfect balance of stainless steel and 18K yellow gold, and the 116718LN Oyster 18K Yellow Gold GMT-Master II which highlights a black dial encompassed by 18K Yellow Gold throughout the bezel, lugs, and Oyster bracelet. The GMT-Master II features a variety of precious metals and combinations of precious metals from stainless steel, to 18K yellow or white gold, the collection features something for everyone’s distinctive tastes.

The GMT Master II features cerachrom bezel which Rolex has been manufacturing since 2005 and is made from an extremely hard ceramic material. The exclusive Cerachrom bezel insert and monobloc bezel have excellent anti-corrosion properties and keep their vibrant colours over time. This type of bezel is virtually scratchproof, and unaffected by exposure to sunlight as well as to chlorinated or sea water. To inscribe the numerals and graduations on such a hard material, Rolex developed a unique process which culminates in their being coated with a thin layer of yellow gold or platinum.

The GMT Master II highlights the patented Easylink extension system to account for expansion of the wrist due to increase in temperature, altitude or physical activity. The easylink clasp lets the wearer increase the bracelet length by about 5 mm to regain maximum comfort. Perfectly integrated into the watch’s design and hidden beneath the clasp, the Easylink system’s opening and closing mechanism is tested thousands of times in the most extreme conditions to guarantee reliability.
