The Day-Date II, with its majestic 41 mm case, enhances the legacy of the original Day-Date. The original Daydate was released in 1956 as the first watch to display the date, as well as the day, in its entirety. In 2008 Rolex released the Day-Date II. With a 41mm case, the Day-Date II is larger than the original Day-Date. It also has the new 3156 calibre movement as well as the new Paraflex shock absorbers and the Rolex Parachrom Hairspring, making the Day-Date II highly resistant to shocks and magnetic fields. As this collection’s name suggests, all timepieces included within it have the same two complications: at three o’clock sits a classic magnified date window, but the Day-Date takes this one step further by including a gently arced elongated rectangular cutout at 12 o’clock that displays the day of the week, which rotates on a disc beneath it. Together, these two complications make the watch perfect for everything from everyday wear to the most formal of occasions. The majority of pieces in the Day-Date collection feature indices rather than numerals while the most luxurious versions have white diamond indices. A handful of wristwatches in this collection use Roman numerals around the dial.

Rolex has released several models of the Daydate II since its original introduction in 2008 all of which are either 18 Gold or Platinum. The Rolex Daydate II 218238 features a white Roman Numeral Dial encompassed by 18K Yellow Gold around the bezel, lugs, and bracelet of the watch. The Rolex Daydate II 218239 features 18K white gold surrounding a white Roman Numeral Dial. The Rolex Daydate II 218235 offers an Ivory Colored Dial embraced gently by 18K Everose Gold. The Rolex Daydate II 218206 features a platinum president bracelet attached to platinum bezel and lugs which envelop a sleek ice blue dial with diamond Roman Numerals.

The Rolex Daydate II features two bezel options; the first is fluted bezel which appears on all the 18K Gold models of the Daydate II, and the second is a smooth dome-like bezel which is an attribute of all platinum versions of the Daydate. When the Rolex Oyster bracelet first appeared with fluted bezel in 1926 it served to screw the bezel onto the case helping to ensure the waterproofness of the watch.  It was, furthermore, identical to the fluting on the case back, which was also screwed onto the case for the same reason, using specific Rolex tools. Over time, the fluting became a purely aesthetic element, denoting it as a genuine Rolex signature feature, a mark of distinction.

Rolex manufactures a specific bracelet only available for the Day-Date line, the prestigious President bracelet. The Day Date II features a crownclasp on the President Bracelet, which is a  very discreet clasp with folding blades. The opening and closing mechanisms are concealed beneath a small Rolex crown shaped lever. The clasp is completely hidden from view.
