Upon its release in 1956 the Rolex Day Date became the first calendar wristwatch to display the time, day, and date in its entirety. The watch was originally set along the newly formulated President Bracelet but in 2000 Rolex introduced the option of its immensely popular Oyster Bracelet with a variety of precious metal including Platinum, White Gold, Yellow Gold, or White Gold. The Rolex Day Date comes in a variety of models all with slight variations of the original design. The Rolex Day Date 118138 features a Green Leather Strap with a Green dial and 18K Yellow Gold Bezel and Lugs while the Rolex Day Date 118139 features the same design as the 118138 but with a blue leather strap and a blue dial that sits on 18K White Gold in the Bezel and Lugs. The Rolex Day-Date 118135 features a chocolate dial with Tobacco Leather and 18K Everose Gold. The Platinum Day Date 118135 features an ice blue dial encompassed by Platinum Domed Bezel and Lugs and attached to a Platinum bracelet.

The Day Date can be featured with either domed or fluted bezel in a variety of precious metals. Each Bezel type can be featured on a Leather Strap, a Presidential Bracelet, or an Oyster Bracelet. Rolex has a long history of using both domed and fluted bezel types, when the Oyster first appeared in 1926 fluted bezel had a practical purpose of screwing the bezel onto the case helping to ensure the waterproofness of the watch. It was, furthermore, identical to the fluting on the case back, which was also screwed onto the case. Over time, the fluting became a purely aesthetic element, available in 18 ct. yellow, Everose or white gold on the Day Date model.

Several models in the Day Date Collection feature Green, Blue, or Tobacco Leather which is fitted with a luxurious strap that uniquely combines the nobility of leather with the peerless security of a Rolex clasp thus making for secure closure and easy opening. The President bracelet was specifically designed for the  Day-Date fitted with a concealed Crownclasp which is very discreet clasp with folding blades, the opening and closing mechanism is concealed beneath a small Rolex crown shaped lever. The Oyster band was issued for the Day Date in more recent years. The Oyster bracelet is a perfect marriage of form and function, aesthetics and technology. It was first introduced in the late 1930s, this particularly robust and comfortable metal bracelet with its broad, flat three-piece links remains the most universal bracelet of the entire Rolex collection. 

The Rolex Day Date was first designed and given to World War II General and 34th President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower. Since then several other presidents have sported a Day-date including John F. Kennedy Jr. and Lyndon B. Johnson.
